Overview

Name | Version: suspended v1.0.0 1.0
Author: juniorastronaut
Device Type: Audio Effect
Description: Suspended is a Dispersion max for live device meant to emulate the acoustic dispersion “zap” sound from exciting suspension bridge cables. Similar to how light disperses when shined through a prism, sound also disperses when traveling through different mediums. In objects like suspension bridge cables, slinkies, or frozen lakes higher frequencies travel faster than lower frequencies, causing a tight hit to sound like a “zap”.

This core of this device is a series of all pass filters tuned to heavily modify the phase of the input signal at different frequencies. The input signal is low pass filtered at different points in the signal chain, and delayed to represent the “echo” or reflections from the boundary conditions of the cable. The delay time ranges from resonant tube -> slinky -> suspension cable. The filter coefficients can be modified with the “Tension” knob to make the cable sound more “tight” or “loose”. Both the delay and filter coefficients can also be modified by, “Shake”, which “shakes” the cable more or less depending on the amplitude of the input signal. At the end of the chain is a small diffusion network, “Metal”, to make smear the signal.

Parameters
INPUT
* Input: Adjusts the gain of the input signal.
* Lowpass: Set the low pass filter cutoff of on the input signal b
* Delay: Creates echo of the input signal. Each echo runs through the all pass filter network an additional time. Low delay times sound like a resonant tube, while high delay times sound like a large suspension cable.
CHARACTER:
* Feedback: Adjusts the feedback time of the of algorithm. The longer the feedback the more the signal will disperse over time.
* ! : panic button to clear feedback.
* Tension: Adjusts the filter coefficients to sound more taught or loose.
* Shake : Modulates the Delay time and the filter coefficients in the algorithm based on the input signal amplitude to sound like the cable is being shaken.
* Metal : A small diffusion network that smears the output sign to make the sound more “metallic”
OUTPUT:
* Button: Hit the button to hit the suspension cable!
* Mono/Stereo: Switches the output of the algorithm from mono to stereo.
* Dry/Wet: Blends the dry input signal with the processed (wet) reverb signal.
* Output: Adjusts the gain of the output signal.
RANDOM
* Button (Random Button): Randomizes almost all parameters when pressed.
* Slider (Random Threshold): Triggers the random button when the input signal passes a set amplitude threshold. At the default value (1), randomization is disabled. Lowering the threshold allows you to, for example, trigger reverb changes from a drum hit, or play an instrument quietly and randomize the reverb with sudden accents in your playing.

Requirements: Max for Live.
Tested in: Ableton Live 11 & 12 with Max 8.5.8 and 9.0.7.
